I guess I'll state the obvious: that the majority of individuals engaging in the activity are not doing it because they want to help bring awareness to the poverty, only to gawk at the residents and environment.

I saw a talk by a Lebanese colleague about the effects of war on depression. She had a slide to show 'war-zone tourists'. The tourists were peering out of a convertible. Very surreal.
